<image:caption>Your venue usually takes the largest slice of the budget pie. For a well-priced venue in the North East, you might expect to pay anything between £3,000 – £8,000+. This often includes the room hire, tables, chairs, and sometimes a wedding coordinator. Food packages are sometimes separate. Some popular local and budget friendly venues that couples love include places like The Duke of Cleveland in Hartlepool and The Whitehouse Hotel in Peterlee, both known for offering great value for couples wanting a relaxed celebration without the sky-high price tag. If your venue also includes catering packages, the cost per guest can range from £40 – £90 per person. So for a 90-guest wedding, catering alone could be £3,600 – £8,000. If you are willing to have your wedding out of peak season and midweek, lots of North East wedding venues have some great package deals that can help to keep venue costs down to a minimum (and keep the honeymoon fund nice and healthy).</image:caption>

<image:caption>A wedding photographer is one of the investments couples rarely regret. After the cake is eaten and the dancefloor clears, the photos are what remain. Typical North East wedding photography prices range between £1,000 – £2,500. Higher-end packages might include engagement shoots, second photographers, albums and full-day coverage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The ceremony is the moment everything else builds towards, so it’s worth making it personal and meaningful. Many couples now choose celebrant-led ceremonies because they allow complete flexibility in location, wording, and style. Most professional celebrants in the North East charge between £450 and £700 depending on experience, ceremony preparation, and travel costs. Finding the right celebrant for you, however, should be more about who you vibe with most, rather than who is the cheapest. For example, as The Celebrant of the North, I currently (2026) offer bespoke wedding and vow renewal ceremonies for £525. Couples looking for one of the best North East celebrants often want something more personal than a standard script - something that reflects their story, personalities and relationship. And, often, the cost of a simple 2-witness legal ceremony at a local registry office alongside a celebrant ceremony can be less costly than hiring a registrar to come out to a wedding venue. Celebrant ceremonies can take place almost anywhere too: gardens, beaches, woodland venues or historic buildings, which can often keep venue costs down.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wedding cakes are works of art these days. Typical prices can range anywhere between £250 – £500. This depends on size, flavour choices, and decorative detail. A lot of couples are opting for supermarket cakes, decorated simply with buttercream and a topper, which, let’s be honest, can also be delicious! Alternatively, you don’t HAVE TO have a cake. Personally, I’d go with more wine.</image:caption>

Typical prices in the North East: DJ: £350 – £700 Live band: £900 – £2,000+ Many couples also add extras like photo booths, magicians and acoustic musicians during the drinks reception. Some couples even hire mini-golf courses and vintage games packages to entertain their guests, which are really cool, but do add that extra cost to the day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Themed weddings are having a serious moment. Hitched highlights the growing appetite for immersive styling, and leading the charge this year is the Bridgerton effect. Regency silhouettes, pastel palettes, dramatic florals, string quartets playing modern pop… it’s romantic escapism at its finest. But 2026 couples are pushing the limits way beyond period drama. Think: ‘90s Nostalgia House Party’ – disposable cameras, arcade corners, neon signage, and a playlist that starts with Spice Girls and ends with early 2000s R&B. Italian Summer Romance – citrus tablescapes, gelato carts, linen suits and handwritten menus in imperfect script. Dark Academia – candlelit dinners, velvet textures, antique books and a moody autumnal colour story. Festivalcore – multiple food trucks, wristbands, live bands and a second-look outfit change for the dancefloor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the most exciting shifts noted in the Hitched 2026 report is the move toward retro and expressive fashion. We’re seeing everything from Bridgerton-inspired empire lines to 1960s mini dresses and even 1980s bubble hems making a comeback. Couples are treating their outfits as a form of storytelling. Second and third outfit changes are now the norm. Bridal suits in unexpected colours. Embroidered veils with personal lyrics. Vintage heirlooms reworked into something modern. Custom trainers for the evening. Statement gloves. Opera coats.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the most meaningful changes I’m seeing (and absolutely loving) is how couples are reshaping the ceremony entrance. Flower girls are being replaced – or joined – by flower dudes, groomsmen tossing petals, or even flower nans proudly stealing the show. Some couples are walking down the aisle together. Others are both having their own individual entrance. Pets are stepping in as ring bearers. And yes, I’ve seen the “mystery ring under a guest’s seat” twist done brilliantly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - How to Plan a Wedding on a Tight Budget (Without Losing Your Mind) - 1. Start with the Guest List</image:title>
<image:caption>The easiest way to keep wedding costs down? Keep the guest list tight. Each extra person adds to your food, seating, and overall space needs. Focus on the people you truly want by your side. Be prepared for a little family diplomacy, but remember: this is your day, not a reunion. Tip: Try setting an initial number and working backward. Think quality time over quantity of attendees.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - How to Plan a Wedding on a Tight Budget (Without Losing Your Mind) - 2. Choose a Budget-Friendly Wedding Venue</image:title>
<image:caption>Wedding venues can take a huge bite out of your budget. Instead of high-cost commercial spaces, consider alternatives like: A family member’s back garden A local park or beach (just be sure to check permits and pray for good weather!) Community halls or social clubs A small restaurant with a private room Sometimes, an unconventional space just needs a little creativity to feel magical.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - How to Plan a Wedding on a Tight Budget (Without Losing Your Mind) - 3. Get Creative with the Ceremony</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most meaningful ways to personalise your wedding, while staying on budget, is through your ceremony itself. Working with a celebrant can give you the freedom to hold your ceremony anywhere (back garden, beach, forest, you name it) and design it to reflect your unique story, values, and vibe. Celebrants can help you: Craft a ceremony that’s personal and heartfelt Include elements from different cultures, faiths, or philosophies Keep the tone relaxed, joyful, or even humorous - whatever suits you best And importantly, it often means you’re not tied to a specific location or format, which can help you save on venue and licensing fees. Just make sure to handle the legal side separately if needed (your local registry office can help with that and it’s much less expensive than you would think).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - How to Plan a Wedding on a Tight Budget (Without Losing Your Mind) - 4. Be Smart About Food</image:title>
<image:caption>Feeding people is one of the biggest expenses, so think outside the banquet box: Host a wedding brunch, lunch, or even a dessert-only reception Consider food trucks or buffet-style catering Ask friends or family to help with a potluck-style spread—if they're game! Note: Presentation goes a long way - affordable food served with style can still feel special.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - How to Plan a Wedding on a Tight Budget (Without Losing Your Mind) - 5. Rethink Traditional Wedding Costs</image:title>
<image:caption>From photography to entertainment, there are ways to cut costs without cutting quality: Ask talented friends to help with photography, music, or decorations Rent or borrow items instead of buying Use free design tools to make your own invitations and signage If you're handy (or know someone who is), DIY can go a long way - just don’t overload yourself. Pick one or two elements to craft, and let the rest be simple.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the end of the day, this celebration is about two people making a commitment. Whether you're in a back garden with a celebrant-led ceremony or in a town hall with a registrar, the core remains the same: love, connection, and community. Let that guide your choices and take comfort in knowing the “perfect” wedding is the one that feels right for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - Wedding Planning: Tying the Knot Without Coming Undone - Step 1: The Engagement Glow (12+ Months Before)</image:title>
<image:caption>Take a moment to bask in the joy of being engaged. Announce it with an Instagram post that subtly flaunts your ring but totally “isn’t about the ring.” Then, the planning begins: Set Your Budget: Decide how much you can or want to spend, without considering selling a kidney. Talk finances openly and honestly. Choose a Date: Be strategic. Try to avoid dates with family conflicts (e.g., your cousin’s annual trip to the International Sausage Festival). Draft Your Guest List: Remember, your coworker’s boyfriend’s flatmate probably doesn’t need an invite. Book Key Vendors: Lock in your venue, celebrant, photographer and caterer. These folks are like hot concert tickets—book early or regret it later.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - Wedding Planning: Tying the Knot Without Coming Undone - Step 2: Foundation Building (9-12 Months Before)</image:title>
<image:caption>You’re in the sweet spot of excitement without the “Oh no, the wedding is TOMORROW” panic. Send Save-the-Dates: Let guests know when to clear their calendars. Find Your Dream Team: Hire florists, DJs/bands, and any other vendors who will make your day extra special. Start Dress Shopping: Yes, it can take months for a gown to be ordered and altered. Start early to avoid last-minute “hot glue and duct tape” fixes. Plan Your Theme: Rustic barn chic? Glamorous ballroom? Star Wars cosplay? The choice is yours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - Wedding Planning: Tying the Knot Without Coming Undone - Step 3: Details, Details, Details (6-9 Months Before)</image:title>
<image:caption>Now it’s time to fine-tune your wedding vision. Book Accommodations: Reserve room blocks for out-of-town guests. Taste Testing: Cake, caterers, and cocktails, oh my! (This is arguably the best part of planning.) Hire Hair & Makeup: You want to look like your best self—not a shiny, stressed version. Plan Your Honeymoon: Because after planning a wedding, you deserve to plan a nap on a beach.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - Wedding Planning: Tying the Knot Without Coming Undone - Step 4: Crunch Time (1-6 Months Before)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is when the wedding-to-do list grows legs and chases you around. Send Invitations: Include RSVP details and meal preferences. Follow up with your inevitable “maybe” guests. Finalise Timeline: Work with your vendors to create a schedule. Include buffer time for that one groomsman who’s always late. Write Your Vows: Whether heartfelt or hilarious, your vows should reflect your relationship - your amazing celebrant can help with these! Do a Trial Run: Hair, makeup and a fitting to make sure everything’s on point.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - Wedding Planning: Tying the Knot Without Coming Undone - Step 5: The Final Countdown (1 Month Before)</image:title>
<image:caption>Your big day is around the corner. Take a deep breath (and maybe a bubble bath). Confirm with Vendors: Double-check all bookings and make sure all balances have been paid. Break in Your Shoes: Avoid hobbling down the aisle by wearing them around the house. Pack Emergency Kits: Include snacks, plasters and tissues for happy tears. Delegate: Assign tasks to trusted friends or a coordinator so you can enjoy the moment.</image:caption>

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, but remember: At the end of the day, it’s about celebrating love. And if something goes wrong, just laugh. <image:caption>Start by conducting thorough research. Look for wedding suppliers who explicitly state their support for LGBTQ couples on their websites, social media, or other platforms. Many inclusive vendors proudly display badges from organisations like the Gay Wedding Institute or Equally Wed. Additionally, seek recommendations from LGBTQ friends or community groups. Personal experiences can provide valuable insights into how a vendor treats LGBTQ clients.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When reaching out to potential suppliers, pay attention to their language and responsiveness. Use inclusive terms like "partner" instead of gender-specific terms. Notice if they mirror your language, which indicates their inclusivity. For example, if you mention your partner's name and they respond with "your partner" rather than assuming gender, it's a positive sign.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - Five Heartwarming Ways to Involve Family Members in Your Wedding Ceremony - Family Hand-fasting: Tying the bonds of love</image:title>
<image:caption>Hand-fasting is an ancient Celtic tradition that symbolises the joining of two people in marriage. However, you can adapt this tradition to include your family members and make it a truly memorable experience. In a family hand-fasting ceremony, you and your partner would hold each other's hands, and family members can take turns adding ribbons or cords, each representing a different blessing or wish for your marriage. As each ribbon is added, the bonds of love and support from your family grow stronger, culminating in a beautiful tapestry of colours and sentiments that encircle your hands. This ritual not only invites your family to participate in your wedding but also allows them to impart their blessings and well-wishes, making your union even more meaningful. After you have ‘tied the knot’, you can frame your interwoven cords and keep them forever. Just lovely!</image:caption>

<image:caption>A sand ceremony is a symbolic and visually stunning way to involve family members in your wedding. It represents the merging of two families into one. Here's how it works: You and your partner each have a different colour of sand in separate containers. During the ceremony, you, your partner, and select family members can take turns pouring your sand into a central container, often a beautiful glass vase. As the sands mix, they become inseparable, illustrating the blending of your lives and the unity of your families. This ritual is not only visually captivating but also a powerful representation of the coming together of your families, forming a strong foundation for your new life together. It also leaves you with a gorgeous keepsake commemorating your special day. Cute right?</image:caption>

<image:caption>A ring warming ceremony is a beautiful way to involve your family members in your wedding, giving them a chance to infuse your wedding rings with love, blessings, and positive energy. Before the ceremony, your wedding rings are placed in a small pouch or dish, and it is passed around to your family members, who hold the rings for a moment and silently make a wish or offer a blessing. By the time the rings make their way to you and your partner, they will be charged with the love and warmth of your nearest and dearest. As you exchange the rings during your ceremony, you'll be wrapping each other in the love and good vibes from your family, creating a deep and lasting connection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A unity candle ceremony is a classic way to denote the union of two families. In this ritual, two individual candles, each representing you and your partner, are used to light a larger candle together. To involve your family members, consider having two additional candles representing each of your families. Before you and your partner light the unity candle, you can invite representatives from each family to come forward and light their respective candles. This act not only demonstrates the unity of your families but also the love and support they provide as you begin this new chapter of your life together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A tree planting ceremony is a wonderful way to involve family members and create a lasting memory of your wedding day. Choose a young tree that holds significance to both you and your partner, and during the ceremony, have each family member take turns adding soil to the tree's base or watering it. This act epitomises the growth of your love and the deep roots that your families provide. As the tree grows over the years, it will serve as a living reminder of your wedding day and the love and support of your family.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the biggest and best advantages of choosing a celebrant for your wedding is the ability to personalise your ceremony. Unlike a registrar, who often follows a set script or format, a celebrant can tailor the ceremony to reflect your beliefs, values, and love story. Whether you dream of a traditional, contemporary or completely wacky ceremony, a celebrant will work closely with you to create a ceremony that captures the essence of your relationship and resonates with you and your guests.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A celebrant invests time in getting to know you as a couple. We love listening to your love story, your dreams, and your vision for the ceremony. By building this connection, a celebrant becomes more than just an officiant; we become a trusted wedding bestie who can authentically convey your journey and emotions to your guests. The result is a heartfelt and emotional ceremony that not only celebrates your union but also leaves your guests feeling all soft and mushy inside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - A Father's Role in Walking His Daughter Down the Aisle: Tradition or Sexism?</image:title>
<image:caption>As an inclusive wedding celebrant and relentless feminist, I have found myself asking this question pretty often. So, I decided to explore the perspectives surrounding fathers walking their daughters down the aisle, examining both the traditional and progressive viewpoints. Here’s what I found.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6329eecce2ab3a7f33d68aae/e4717a78-f8aa-46fe-9463-48ecc23b16de/bride+considering+options.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - A Father's Role in Walking His Daughter Down the Aisle: Tradition or Sexism? - 3. Empowerment and Autonomy:</image:title>
<image:caption>On the other hand, those critical of this tradition argue that it perpetuates patriarchal norms and reinforces the notion that women need to be "given away" from one man to another. They argue that it symbolises the transfer of ownership and control from the father to the husband, reducing the agency and autonomy of the bride. Critics maintain that the tradition reinforces archaic, outdated gender roles and undermines the progress made towards gender equality.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - A Father's Role in Walking His Daughter Down the Aisle: Tradition or Sexism? - 4. Evolving Practices</image:title>
<image:caption>In recent years, there has been a shift towards more inclusive and progressive wedding practices. Many couples are redefining traditions to reflect their identities, values and personal beliefs. Alternative approaches include both parents walking their children down the aisle, couples walking together, the couples’ children walking them both down the aisle, or brides choosing to walk alone, signifying their independence and agency. These changes reflect a desire to challenge traditional gender roles and foster equality within the context of marriage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - A Father's Role in Walking His Daughter Down the Aisle: Tradition or Sexism? - 5. Personal Choice and Meaning:</image:title>
<image:caption>Ultimately, the decision of whether a father walks his daughter down the aisle should be based on personal choice and the values of those involved. It is essential to recognize that while the tradition may have historical connotations, its meaning can vary depending on individual interpretations and intentions. Some fathers and daughters may find great significance and emotional connection in upholding this tradition, while others may choose alternative options that align with their beliefs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - A Father's Role in Walking His Daughter Down the Aisle: Tradition or Sexism? - The Conclusion?</image:title>
<image:caption>The question of whether a father walking his daughter down the aisle is sexist is a complex and nuanced one. It encompasses historical context, emotional symbolism, gender roles, and individual autonomy. As society continues to evolve, it is crucial to engage in open and respectful conversations about the traditions we uphold, evaluating their impact on gender equality and personal empowerment. Ultimately, the decision should be guided by personal values, ensuring that the wedding ceremony reflects the couple's beliefs and fosters a sense of inclusivity, love, and respect for all involved.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - What is an unplugged ceremony and should you be having one? - An unplugged ceremony is one without any technology: no phones, cameras, video cameras (does anyone use them these days?) or tablets to take photos or videos of the ceremony. The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer here; it’s completely up to you and your preferences. I’ve been involved with weddings where the couple were totally fine with, and encouraged, their guests taking lots of photos; but I’ve also led ceremonies where the couple wanted no technology at all - just their hired photographer. Allowing your guests to take and share photos does mean that you will have a vast array of images from your special day to enjoy afterwards. Alternatively, you could keep the ceremony device free and then allow the phones to come back out at the reception. The choice is yours.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - What is an unplugged ceremony and should you be having one? - Limit distractions</image:title>
<image:caption>You know what it’s like in the cinema, in a meeting or during a silent moment in a theatre: there’s always that one person with a loud, ridiculous ringtone who gets a call or text right at a critical moment, therefore stealing the spotlight, ruining the experience for everyone else and having to ashamedly apologise whilst fumbling around trying to find the offending device. Asking your guests to switch off and put away their devices avoids all that. You can’t stop the babies crying or the chatty auntie, but phones you can ban.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your wedding is one of the happiest days of your life and, hopefully, a once in a lifetime celebration. You’ve invited your family, friends and loved ones to share your happiness so, when you look out at your crowd, what would you rather see? A sea of smiles or the back of everyone’s phones? Of course, you want to see that joy beaming back at you - what a great reason to put those devices away.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | Joanne - Celebrant of the North | Award Winning North East Celebrant | - What is an unplugged ceremony and should you be having one? - 4. Keep your professional pics screen-free</image:title>
<image:caption>Your wedding photos are going to be a wonderful reminder of your special day for years to come. You’ll be able to look back at the excited nerves and anticipation just before the ceremony, the overjoyed smiles, the moment you said your vows, the moment you were pronounced as married and, of course, that first kiss as a married couple. Having an unplugged ceremony means that those keepsakes won’t be littered with the images of your guests’ phone screens or Uncle Charlie standing up in the crowd to get that shot just as you touch lips. Sit down Charlie, this is not your day!</image:caption>

So, if you’ve made it to 5, 10, 25, even 50 or 60 years of marriage, THAT is a reason to celebrate! <image:caption>Whether it’s a few years or a few decades down the line, as time moves on, so too do relationships and marriages. You may choose to renew your vows because your partnership has evolved, and what a great reason that is. You’ve stuck together through everything life’s had to throw at you, experienced adventures, trials and tribulations, maybe even started and grown a family - your relationship is bound to have been shaped and moulded into something more than it once was. The vows you once made may not be fully relevant anymore, so now could be the perfect time to reassess and redefine who you are as a couple by refreshing those intimate promises for the years you are yet to experience together. Also, if you have them, you can even get your children involved as they are a huge part of your journey and your marriage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quite simply, you are still head-over-heels, over-the-moon in love with each other and you want to shout it from every rooftop! You are the couple who always get told to “Get a room,” so why not make that room a beautiful venue filled with your nearest and dearest where you can show off your love and adoration in style? Whether you plan an elaborate proposal and a huge spectacle of a ceremony, or a much more personal intimate affair, there will be no denying how you still feel for one another when you are standing face to face, declaring your love, trust and respect once more.</image:caption>
